The Content Consumption Creation Ratio states that for every hour you spend consuming content you should give it back by spending two hours creating content.
Here, the goal with CCCR is simple: you challenge yourself to create twice the amount of content for what you consume.
This will lead to one of the following:
- You will reduce the time you spend consuming content.
- You will force yourself to create content and post it.
What is the Content Consumption Creation Ratio?
The Content Consumption Creation Ratio simply challenges you to return twice the amount of content that you watch or read.
Simply put, your ability to creative captivating content is tested to its limits.
Who benefits with CCCR?
Here are the types of people who benefit from the Content Consumption Creation Ratio:
- People that constantly doom scroll on Instagram or watch a ton of videos on YouTube and other OTTs.
- Lurkers and scrollers who use apps like Twitter and Reddit but never bother putting out anything on their own.
- Individuals looking for inspiration and mood-boards that use content consumption as a tool for procrastination.
- Those that look to create content but are too absorbed by various resources in a way that does not allow them to put content out.
Who came up with the idea of Content Consumption Creation Ratio?
I did; the reason for coming up with CCCR was because I noticed that I would need to create content and post it at some point instead of just viewing, lurking, scrolling or liking.
As a minimalist generalist, it is my internal way of challenging and conquering a difficulty I face.
How does one benefit with CCCR?
With CCCR, you are either forced to stop watching content or force yourself to put content out in the world for others to see.
To be honest, CCCR is a coin flip: you either reduce your screen time or become willing to take on risks by pushing content forward.
CCCR also helps you with tracking time, where you spend your hours and how you can give it back to those in your communities, circles and areas of influence.
How to get started with the Content Creation Consumption Ratio challenge?
If you are really keen on getting started with the CCCR challenge, there are some ground rules that we must set before we begin.
And to make sure you are not overwhelmed, I will go from the easiest step to the more challenging aspects of CCCR.
Easy: start by tracking individual sessions on each app
On your first day of the challenge, simply see how much time you spend from the moment you open the app to when you close it.
Eg: you open Instagram at 1:11 PM and scroll until 1:27 PM - that is 16 minutes.
Cool, note it down.
Use a journal like Dwoth to track these as an individual session.
Made a habit to track down every such session for the following:
- Instagram
- YouTube
- TikTok
- X (Twitter)
- Any other app where you consume content. This includes games and OTT apps.
Remember: no excuses; do not shave off time because "oh I was not consuming content I was simply replying to messages which happened to be Reels."
PS - app here could apply to app, desktop, browser; wherever and however you consume content. Don't be sly, don't find loopholes that only you can convince yourself of working.
Easy: time to realise how much content you will make.
For the first day, calculate the total amount of time you have used consuming content.
Is it 50 minutes? 3 hours? 6 HOURS?
You will get your answer depending on your usage because you need to multiply it by two.
3 hours of content means that every day you will need to create 6 hours of content.
Can you do it? That's 9 hours dedicated to this challenge?
Medium: let's start off with a simple challenge.
To start with, on your next day count the number of hours you spend consuming content.
If it's two hours, here's your first challenge.
Spend one hour (yes, half of it) to create content or write about your day.
Can you do it? It is at this point that you realise that CCCR is a difficult mountain to climb.
If you cannot do that, just quit. I can't help you. Please feel free to return to your ways.
Rules for the Content Creation Consumption Ratio challenge.
If you have not given up yet, I commend you; your biggest challenge or transformation (may it be both) starts now.
Here are the rules for CCCR and following it is essential for not lying to yourself and maintaining a healthy challenge.
Work hours do not count towards CCCR.
Spending 8 hours at work will not balance out 4 hours of content consumption.
If you are employed, self-employed or freelancing, do not count those hours towards your CCCR challenge.
The content you create should be unique and within your own rights to use where you are not promised to get paid for it.
You cannot carry over days and hours
The hours you spending consuming content on Friday should be returned 2x'ed on Friday itself: the same day. Not tomorrow, not day after and certainly not next Friday.
If you are creating content of 6 hours because you are on a trip, sure, you can use it on the same day if you are consuming content to gauge against it. Not the next day.
It should be meaningful content that you put out to the world.
If you are creating content as a part of CCCR, the content you create should be published to the public.
I can see many of you complaining about how you are creating something that can only be revealed later.
No. Put in the hours, post updates or post the content. Let people know how many hours you have spent on it.
I hope you can figure out a way to make CCCR work in your favour.
